A loyal and fierce Dwarf warrior, Gimli vowed to protect Frodo on his quest to destroy the One Ring and represent his people as a member of the Fellowship. Proud, gruff, and quick to anger, he initially held a deep distrust of Elves, especially Legolas whos father once imprisoned Gimlis. As the Fellowship came upon the Mines of Moria, Gimli looked forward to a reunion with his cousin Balin who lived in the underground fortress, but as the group traversed the mines, it became clear that Orcs had overtaken them, slaying Balin and the Dwarves that once lived within. Gimlis rough exterior fell to reveal a deep sadness, but he was allowed only a moment to grieve before his formidable ax was needed against the Orcs and Cave Troll that came upon them.

After the Fellowship fought its way out of Moria, Gimli entered the Elven forest of Lothlorian where he met Queen Galadriel. Her beauty, kindness, and understanding dispelled his suspicion of the Elves so much that Gimli began to forge an alliance with Legolas, nicknaming him Elf-friend. Together they battled the forces of Mordor, competing with each other to see who could slay the most Orcs, and as time wore on their friendship proved lifelong.
