In 480 BC Leonidas went to Thermopylae with 300 of his finest soldiers, all "men with sons", where he was joined by a 7000-strong Greek force, in an attempt to hold the pass of Thermopylae against the hundreds of thousands of Persian soldiers who had invaded from the north of Greece under King Xerxes The Great.

Written and illustrated by Frank Miller, the story of 300 depicts the Battle of Thermopylae and the events leading up to it from the perspective of Leonidas I, king of Sparta. The comic was inspired by the 1962 film, The 300 Spartans, a movie that Miller watched as a young boy.
